The death toll from landslides in southern Ethiopia reached 257 on Thursday and is expected to rise to 500, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

The OCHA reported in a statement that those affected by the disaster, whose number exceeds 15,000 people, “are at high risk of further landslides and need to be evacuated to safe areas immediately”.

Ethiopia and the other countries of the Horn of Africa have been hit hard in recent years by extreme weather events aggravated by climate change, such as floods or droughts, that have left thousands dead in the region.
